Why Study Psychology?


The skills that you acquire during your study of psychology such as analyzing data, communicating complex information, and understanding human behavior are all abilities that are highly prized by employers. Having a background in human psychology can also lead to further study in areas such as law, medicine, or the life sciences. Or maybe you’ve always wanted to learn more about your own mind, emotions, and actions? Earning a degree in psychology is an excellent way to gain a greater understanding of people. Sports psychology is the study of how psychology influences sports, athletic performance, exercise, and physical activity.

Educational psychology is the branch of psychology concerned with schools, teaching psychology, educational issues, and student concerns. Educational psychologists often study how students learn or work directly with students, parents, teachers, and administrators to improve student outcomes. These psychologists generally specialize in an area such as infant, child, adolescent, or geriatric development, while others may study the effects of developmental delays.

It is centered on treating clients experiencing mental distress and a wide variety of psychological symptoms. Cognitive psychologists often use an information-processing model to describe how the mind works, suggesting that the brain stores and processes information much like a computer. Clinical psychologyis the branch of psychology concerned with the assessment and treatment of mental illness, abnormal behavior, and psychiatric disorders. Clinicians often work in private practices, but many also work in community centers or at universities and colleges. Behavioral psychology, also known as behaviorism, is a theory of learning based on the idea that all behaviors are acquired through conditioning.

Each specific area contributes to our understanding of the many different psychological factors that influence who you are, how you behave, and how you think. Social psychology seeks to explain and understand social behavior and looks at diverse topics including group behavior, social interactions, leadership, nonverbal communication, and social influences on decision-making. Most school psychologists work in elementary and secondary schools, but others work in private clinics, hospitals, state agencies, and universities. Some go into private practice and serve as consultants, especially those with a doctoral degree in school psychology.

A clinical psychologist concentrates on the intellectual, emotional, biological, psychological, social, and behavioral aspects of human performance throughout a person’s life, across varying cultures and socioeconomic levels. All of these significant applications of psychology as a ‘real’ science are important to human functioning, adding to our knowledge base, and adding to the scientific literature. The American Psychology Association defines Psychology as the scientific study of the mind and behavior. Through the years if the said practice, it has been subject to many misconceptions regarding its real nature as well as of its practitioners. Still, its many discoveries on the human psyche are one of the fun things about it.

Personality psychology is the branch of psychology that focuses on the study of the thought patterns, feelings, and behaviors that make each individual unique. Classic theories of personality include Freud’s psychoanalytic theory of personality andErikson’s theory of psychosocial development. They might also research how people cope with illnesses and help patients look for new, more effective coping strategies. Some professionals in this field help design prevention and public awareness programs, while others work within the government to improve health care policies.

In 1890, an American philosopher, William James, published a book entitled Principles of Psychology. It was discussed by psychologists worldwide for many decades. In the same year, New York State passed the State Care Act, in which people with mental health problems were to leave poor houses and enter the hospital for treatment.
